The Athletic Therapists at Alpine Sport Therapy Centre believe in an active–patient approach to complete rehabilitation of your injuries. All of our patients are encouraged to become involved in their own recovery through active rehab with a limited amount of passive work.

Your treatment will include a thorough history and assessment of your injury or condition. Athletic therapists use exercise as the basis of all treatment programs. Your exercise program will be individually designed for your specific needs and should easily incorporate into your lifestyle. They will include a variety of strengthening, stretching, sport/work specific training, core stabilization, and postural training. In addition, your treatment may include a variety of manual techniques performed by the therapist. These will be determined by the stage and condition of your injury and may also include ultrasound, cupping, TENS, or IFC.

Athletic Therapists specialize in late stage/reconditioning rehab. Our goal is to determine and treat the cause of your injury; therefore we look at the whole person. We base our solution on understanding what may be a complex situation or set of circumstances.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is a system of medicine that describes the disease process in the body. It has a framework for describing the symptoms of the disease and explaining the etiology (cause and progression). It includes treatment principles and a variety of therapeutic methods to return the body to a state of health. The TCM philosophy was weighted heavily in the prevention of disease and not just treatment.

Acupuncture, the most commonly recognized treatment method of TCM, is the insertion of very fine needles in specific points on the body to effect change. In ancient times the change was described as moderating the flow of Qi in the body. Today we understand that the change involves release of cellular chemicals, activation of nerve reflexes at the spinal cord and brain, and the release of neurotransmitters and hormones.

Acupuncture promotes natural healing. It can enhance recuperative power and immunity, support physical and emotional health, and improve overall function and well-being. It is a safe, painless and effective way to treat a wide variety of medical problems.

Sport massage focuses on athletic performance, sports injuries, and injury prevention. Sport massage therapists have a unique understanding of the demands that different sports place on your body. Treatments may be pre or post event or maintenance massage.

Therapeutic massage is important after an injury to promote healing, decreasing scar tissue adhesions as well as managing pain and improving muscle function. It can also be used for injury prevention by increasing flexibility, improving postural and body mechanic awareness and decreasing psychological stress.

Jenna’s passion for athletic therapy began when she was a young athlete prone to injury and her visits to an Athletic Therapist (her future Mentor) were frequent. Her passion continues in her field and clinical practice, working with active individuals eager to return to their activity rehabilitated and in better shape than ever.

She has worked with many different sports at varying levels, including varsity hockey, rugby, volleyball and provincial level rugby and soccer. She has also worked community level football, hockey and wrestling. Jenna’s athletic career consisted of predominantly over head, anaerobic sports (fastpitch and volleyball) so she enjoys treating shoulders and elbows and tailoring rehabilitative programs for their activity.

Noticing the high incidence of postural related pain, Jenna has taken a special interest and received additional training in workplace ergonomics.

Terry’s massage career began in 1987. With the ‘88 Winter Olympics a year away, he chose to take a highly regarded program from the Sports Massage Training Institute of Costa Mesa CA, that was organized for Alberta therapists by AMTA. Much of his practicum was spent working with international athletes as they trained and competed at new facilities in Calgary, Nakiska and Canmore. Locally, he found the profile of sports massage was raised with the reputation it gained from athletes at World Cup events and the Olympics. As a direct result, Terry enjoyed the opportunity to work seasonally with Team Canada (Hockey) from 1988-91.

Terry’s sports massage experience and continuing training have helped him learn to recognize myofascial pain patterns that often develop after injuries, overtraining or from posture and strain in workplace environments. His techniques are effective for treating myofascial restrictions and muscle imbalances which can result in pain and restricted movement. Easily adaptable for any fitness level, he integrates Myofascial Release, Trigger Point therapy, PNF stretching, strain/counter-strain, as well as other remedial massage techniques, into his treatments. Each treatment is specifically focused to address the needs of the individual. He is also a registered provider with Veteran Affairs Canada.

Terry loves travelling, biking and hiking and likes to experience the outdoors, especially in Kananaskis, Hawaii and the Pacific northwest. He always enjoys comparing notes about favorite travel destinations or bike trails.
